About this course

Geography and Scottish literature is an unusual but intellectually stimulating combination that brings together one of the most practically relevant and analytically broad academic disciplines with one of the richest, most distinctive, and most underexplored literary traditions in Europe. Geography examines the relationships between human societies and the physical world, considering the variability in physical and human landscapes and the interrelationships between them. Scottish literature provides access to a literary tradition written in multiple languages, including English, Scots, and Gaelic, and spanning medieval romances, Enlightenment essays, Romantic poetry, and a vivid twentieth and twenty-first century literary scene. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year, full-time degree includes a year abroad, adding an international academic and cultural dimension to a programme that is already rich in distinctive content. You will develop quantitative and qualitative analytical skills through the geography component, alongside the capacity for close reading, critical interpretation, and cultural understanding that Scottish literary study demands. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study these disciplines in a different academic context, broadening your perspective. Glasgow's location in Scotland's largest city gives the programme a particular immediacy for both the human geography and the literary dimensions of the degree. The typical entry tariff is 200 UCAS points. Graduates from geography and Scottish literature programmes move into careers that draw on one or both disciplines. Education, arts and cultural administration, publishing, journalism, heritage and archive work, environmental roles in local and national government, GIS and spatial analysis, the creative sector, and academic research are all natural destinations. The interdisciplinary breadth of the degree makes graduates adaptable. Postgraduate study in geography, Scottish literary and cultural studies, or related fields provides a natural continuation.
