About this course

Geology is the science of the Earth, concerned with understanding the materials that make up the planet, the processes that have shaped it over billions of years, and the ways in which geological forces continue to operate in the present. It encompasses mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, palaeontology, structural geology, geophysics and geochemistry, and it applies these to practical questions about where resources are located, where hazards exist and how the Earth has evolved. Geologists work in fieldwork, laboratory analysis and computer modelling, and their knowledge is essential for managing the planet's resources and understanding the risks it presents. At the University of Leicester, this three-year programme gives you the knowledge and skills to piece together billions of years of Earth history and understand how our planet works, developing the theoretical understanding and practical abilities that geologists use to make a real difference to society and the environment. A sandwich placement year provides professional experience in a geological or related environment, and a year abroad and work placement opportunities extend the programme, giving you a well-rounded preparation that includes significant professional and international exposure alongside academic depth. Geology graduates pursue careers in the oil and gas industry, mining and mineral exploration, environmental consultancy, engineering geology, hydrogeology, geological surveying, national parks and heritage organisations, and academic and government research. The growing importance of subsurface resources for energy transition, including geothermal energy and critical minerals for batteries, means that geological expertise is in increasing demand. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in geology, petroleum geoscience, environmental geochemistry or a related specialism. The analytical skills and fieldwork experience that a geology degree develops are also valued in adjacent sectors including construction, insurance and environmental management.
