MA German and Italian and Spanish
About this course
German, Italian, and Spanish studied together is an extraordinary linguistic undertaking, developing proficiency in three of Europe's major languages while engaging with three rich and distinct cultural traditions. German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and the language of a major industrial and intellectual culture. Italian connects you to one of the world's great artistic, literary, and musical traditions and to the third largest economy in the eurozone. Spanish gives you access to more than five hundred million native speakers across Europe, Latin America, and beyond, and to a cultural tradition of enormous diversity and depth. At the University of St Andrews this four-year MA programme includes a year abroad, giving you sustained immersion in one or more of the countries whose languages you are studying and the opportunity to encounter their cultures at first hand. You will develop language and communication skills in all three languages to a high level of proficiency, following your own particular interests through a broad range of course options that reflect and explore the cultural heritages of the German-speaking lands, Italy, and the Spanish-speaking world. The combination demands exceptional commitment and linguistic versatility, and the graduates it produces are genuinely rare. Trilingual graduates with German, Italian, and Spanish are exceptionally well placed for careers in international business, European and international organisations, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, broadcasting, journalism, publishing, and education. The combination of three major European languages is highly valued by multinational companies, cultural institutions, and any organisation operating across multiple European or Latin American markets. Further study at postgraduate level in modern languages, comparative literature, translation studies, or European studies is a natural next step for those with an appetite for advanced academic work in one or more of the traditions.
