MA German and Mathematics (4yrs)
About this course
German and mathematics is an unusual combination, but one that rewards the students who choose it with a distinctive and genuinely portable set of skills. German is one of Europe's most important languages, the first language of more than a hundred million people, the working language of major international organisations, and the language of a rich literary and intellectual tradition that runs from Goethe and Kant to Brecht and Habermas. Mathematics develops abstract reasoning, the ability to construct rigorous proofs, and the quantitative skills that underlie the physical sciences, engineering, economics and finance. Together they produce graduates who can think across two fundamentally different but equally demanding disciplines. At the University of Aberdeen you will follow a four-year programme that takes both disciplines seriously, developing your German to a high level of proficiency alongside a rigorous grounding in mathematics, spanning pure and applied areas. The programme includes a year abroad, which for language students typically means a period of study or work in a German-speaking country, deepening your linguistic fluency and your understanding of the cultures in which the language lives. Aberdeen's German teaching has been rated Excellent, and the mathematics department has a strong research reputation in both pure and applied areas. Graduates of German and mathematics have an unusual combination of skills that is valued in a wide range of careers. The mathematical training opens doors in finance, data science, actuarial work, engineering, research, and any role requiring strong quantitative reasoning. The German dimension adds value in European financial centres, international technology companies, academic research with German-speaking partners, and roles in translation, diplomacy or European institutions. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, finance, or German studies, building on the distinctive combination the degree provides. Teaching is another well-established path, particularly for graduates who combine both subjects.
