MA German and Middle East Studies
About this course
German and Middle East Studies is a combination that brings together the deep cultural, literary, and linguistic heritage of the German-speaking world with the civilisations, languages, histories, and politics of one of the world's most complex regions. Germany is Europe's largest economy and a central actor in European and global politics. The Middle East encompasses ancient cultures, major world religions, significant energy resources, and some of the most consequential geopolitical conflicts of the modern era. Studying both in depth is an ambitious and genuinely distinctive undertaking. At the University of St Andrews this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops your German language and communication skills to a high level of proficiency, with options to follow your particular interests across a broad range of courses exploring the rich cultural heritage of the German-speaking lands. Alongside the language, you will engage with German literature, history, culture, and society from the medieval period to the present. The Middle East Studies strand introduces you to the languages, histories, and contemporary politics of the region, developing area knowledge and analytical skills that few graduates of single-subject degrees can match. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a German-speaking environment and to deepen your linguistic fluency and cultural understanding. Graduates with this combination are exceptionally well placed for careers that require both European fluency and in-depth knowledge of the Middle East. Many move into diplomacy, the foreign office, international organisations, and government, where this combination of area expertise and language ability is genuinely rare. Others work in international media, journalism, policy research, development organisations, or business with a significant Middle Eastern or German-speaking dimension. Postgraduate study in German studies, Middle East studies, area studies, or international relations is a natural next step for those who want to develop specialist expertise.
