MA German and Persian and Spanish
About this course
German, Persian, and Spanish is a trilingual programme that brings together three languages with very different histories, geographies, and cultural reach. German is the dominant language of central Europe, the language of philosophy, music, and science, and one of the most important commercial languages in the European Union. Persian, or Farsi, is the language of Iran and a classical literary tradition of extraordinary depth, as well as a significant regional language across parts of South and Central Asia. Spanish is spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Europe, Latin America, and beyond, and is one of the most widely studied languages in the world. Developing real competence in all three gives you a genuinely unusual and valuable combination of skills. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time MA programme takes you to a high level of proficiency in German and Spanish, and develops your knowledge of Persian alongside the rich cultural traditions of each language. You will engage with literature, culture, history, and contemporary contexts in all three linguistic worlds, developing not just linguistic ability but genuine cultural understanding. The programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to live and study in a country where one of your languages is spoken, deepening your fluency through immersion and giving you direct experience of the cultures you have been studying. Graduates of trilingual programmes have rare and genuinely marketable skills. Careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy, the foreign service, intelligence, journalism, publishing, and international organisations are all accessible, and the combination of German, Persian, and Spanish is particularly distinctive. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in languages, area studies, international relations, or translation, building on the linguistic foundation the degree provides.
