MA German and Social Policy
About this course
German and social policy is a combination that pairs the cultural depth and linguistic access of German studies with the analytical frameworks of a discipline concerned with how societies organise welfare, health, education, housing, and social care. Social policy is the study of how states and other institutions respond to social needs and social problems, examining the origins, design, implementation, and effects of the policies that shape people's life chances. German is the language of a country whose welfare state has been one of the most influential and extensively studied in the world, making the combination intellectually coherent as well as practically valuable. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme brings together two strong research traditions within one of Scotland's premier universities. You will develop real proficiency in German, engaging with the language's literature, culture, media, and contemporary society, alongside a rigorous grounding in social policy theory and analysis. Edinburgh's social policy provision covers the comparative welfare state, health and social care policy, poverty and inequality, education policy, and the politics of social reform, drawing on political science, sociology, and economics. The comparative dimension is particularly relevant here: German social policy and welfare arrangements differ from those of the UK in instructive ways, and understanding both from the inside, linguistically and analytically, is a genuinely distinctive intellectual position. The degree develops both linguistic competence and analytical skills in policy research, critical evaluation of evidence, and the ability to construct arguments about contested social questions. Writing clearly and rigorously about complex matters is a skill developed throughout. Graduates work in the civil service, social policy research, international organisations, the charity sector, NGOs with European and German links, health and welfare administration, and academic research. The German language specialism opens roles in German-speaking countries and in international organisations where German is a working language. Postgraduate study in social policy, German, European studies, or public administration is a natural next step.
