BA German and Spanish
About this course
German and Spanish at University College London combines two of Europe's most widely spoken languages, each with rich and distinctive literary traditions, and connects you to an extraordinary breadth of cultural, historical, and intellectual worlds. German carries you into the philosophy and literature of Goethe, Schiller, Kafka, and Brecht, the history of one of Europe's most significant nations, and the contemporary culture of the German-speaking world across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Spanish opens access to the literature and thought of the Iberian peninsula and, beyond that, to the vast and varied cultures of Latin America, making it one of the world's most geographically and culturally expansive language traditions. Studying both together over four years at UCL, with a year abroad spent in countries where each language is spoken, builds genuine dual competence. You will take modules in language skills across speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation in both German and Spanish, alongside cultural modules covering literature, history, film, linguistics, politics, and other fields. The range of options available allows you to tailor the programme to your own intellectual interests, building depth in the areas that matter most to you. The year abroad is divided between two countries, giving you the immersive experience that is essential to achieving fluency and deep cultural understanding in both languages. A typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the academic standard expected for this intensive joint honours programme. Graduates from German and Spanish at UCL move into careers in translation and interpreting, journalism, diplomacy, international business, cultural institutions, academia, publishing, international law, and education. Many continue to postgraduate study in one or both language areas, or in comparative literature, cultural studies, or European studies.
