BA German and Spanish (with a year abroad)
About this course
German and Spanish together give you access to two of Europe's most significant linguistic and cultural traditions. German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union, the language of Goethe, Kafka, and Brecht, and the vehicle of philosophy, music, and intellectual life that has shaped the modern world in profound ways. Spanish, spoken by hundreds of millions of people across four continents, opens the cultures of Spain and the vast diversity of Latin America, from Argentine literature to Mexican cinema to Colombian music. Studying the two simultaneously deepens your understanding of each, as the contrasts and similarities between Germanic and Romance language structures sharpen your linguistic awareness. At York this four-year full-time programme is taught in the languages you are learning, immersing you in German and Spanish from the outset rather than mediating them through English. This approach, guided by staff many of whom are native speakers, accelerates your development of fluency and cultural knowledge more rapidly than translation-based methods. The curriculum focuses on society, politics, and culture, ensuring that language learning is always grounded in genuine engagement with the worlds these languages inhabit. The degree includes a sandwich year, giving you professional experience in a German or Spanish-speaking environment, and work placement experience is embedded in the programme. Graduates are exceptionally well placed for careers in international business, translation and interpreting, diplomacy, the civil service, education, journalism, and any role where fluency in two major European languages is a direct professional asset. German and Spanish is a particularly powerful combination for careers in European institutions, multinational companies, and international organisations. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in German, Hispanic, or European studies, or in translation and interpreting.
