MA German/Business and Management
About this course
German and business and management is a combination that makes sense in professional as well as intellectual terms. German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and the language of one of the world's largest economies. Understanding German language and culture gives you genuine access to business and cultural networks that are closed to those without it, and the combination with management education creates a graduate profile that is distinctive and commercially relevant. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme brings together the study of the German language, literature and culture across the full range of the discipline, from the eighteenth century to contemporary German-speaking society, alongside a thorough grounding in management theory and practice. The language and culture component develops your proficiency across all registers, your ability to read and analyse literary and cultural texts, and your understanding of the historical and social contexts that shape German-speaking societies. The management component covers strategy, marketing, finance, operations, organisational behaviour and leadership. A year abroad, which is central to the programme, gives you the opportunity to live and study in a German-speaking country, deepening your linguistic competence and cultural understanding in ways that classroom study alone cannot achieve. A sandwich year placement and work placement experience further strengthen your professional readiness. You will develop genuine bilingual capability alongside the analytical and commercial skills that employers in international business, consultancy, law, finance and the public sector value. The ability to operate across linguistic and cultural boundaries is increasingly important in professional life, and this degree prepares you to do so with confidence and depth. Graduates move into international business, consultancy, financial services, law, diplomacy, journalism, teaching, translation and the cultural sector. Many pursue postgraduate study in languages, management, international relations or law, and the combination of language expertise and management knowledge keeps career options genuinely broad.
