About this course

German and music is a combination that brings together two rich and deeply connected cultural traditions. German is not only a major European language but the language in which some of the most important contributions to Western music were made: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Wagner and Mahler all worked in German-speaking culture, and the theoretical and analytical literature of music has a substantial German dimension. Studying German and music together means engaging with each discipline in the light of the other, deepening your understanding of both. At the University of Glasgow, the German strand of this five-year degree covers a wide spectrum from eighteenth-century literature and culture through to the contemporary, as the university's own description notes, developing your language skills to an advanced level alongside your knowledge of German-speaking literary, cultural and intellectual history. The music strand develops your understanding of music theory, analysis, history and, where relevant, performance, giving you the analytical and historical tools to engage with music across periods and traditions. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placements, providing structured opportunities to develop professional experience alongside your academic formation. Five years allows both subjects to be studied with real depth, producing a graduate who is genuinely fluent in German and seriously trained in music rather than superficially acquainted with both. The combination develops cultural literacy, analytical thinking, language competence and the aesthetic intelligence to engage with two of Europe's great creative traditions. Graduates go on to careers in music performance, music teaching, arts administration, arts journalism, broadcasting, translation, music publishing, cultural organisations, education and many other fields where the combination of German and musical knowledge opens specific opportunities. Further study in music, German, musicology or music education is also a common route.
