About this course

Global affairs, politics, and international relations brings together the study of contemporary world events with the analytical frameworks of political science and the systematic theory of international relations. Global affairs takes a broad and current lens, examining how international news, crises, and trends can be understood through political and social analysis. Politics provides the tools to understand power, governance, and institutional behaviour within and between states. International relations explores the dynamics of the international system, from diplomacy and security to trade, environmental governance, and human rights. Together, the three elements prepare you to engage thoughtfully and analytically with the world as it actually is. At the University of Chester, this three-year, full-time programme develops your analytical and critical thinking skills across all three areas simultaneously. You will study political theory and comparative politics alongside the core frameworks of international relations, and you will engage with global current affairs through an evidence-based social scientific lens. The programme develops your ability to read complex situations carefully, to construct well-supported arguments, and to communicate your analysis effectively in both written and spoken form. Chester's commitment to developing graduates who are practically capable as well as intellectually equipped is reflected in the structure of the programme. This full-time programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, providing professional experience and international exposure alongside your academic study. Both components add considerable value to the degree and to your development as a globally aware and professionally capable graduate. Graduates go on to careers in government, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, think-tanks, NGOs, international business, law, and development. The combination of political understanding, international awareness, and professional experience makes for a versatile and career-ready qualification.
