MA Global Sustainable Development
About this course
Global sustainable development is the study of how human societies can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. The concept sits at the intersection of economics, environmental science, political theory and social justice, bringing these disciplines together to address some of the most serious challenges facing the world: climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality, poverty and the governance of shared global resources. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year programme explores the economic, environmental and social dimensions of development and sustainability. You will examine how growth, resource use and global trade create both opportunities and risks, how international institutions and agreements attempt to coordinate responses to planetary challenges, and how communities and states navigate the tensions between development and environmental protection. The programme is genuinely interdisciplinary, drawing on social science, natural science and humanities methods to build a broad and critical understanding of these interconnected issues. You will develop the analytical and research skills to engage seriously with complexity and uncertainty. You will learn to interpret data, evaluate competing policy options, understand the perspectives of different actors and communicate findings in ways that are relevant to decision-makers and communities. Case studies and problem-based learning draw on real situations from across the world, ensuring that your understanding is grounded in the diversity of global experience rather than a single regional or cultural perspective. Graduates go into careers in international organisations, government, NGOs, environmental consultancy, development finance, policy research and corporate sustainability. The breadth of the programme, combining economics, politics, environment and society, means it opens doors across many sectors. Postgraduate study in sustainable development, environmental policy, international development or climate change is a common next step for those who want to deepen their expertise.
