BA Graphic Arts and Moving Image
About this course
Graphic arts and moving image is a broad creative discipline that spans print, digital, typographic and time-based media. Graphic arts encompasses the traditions of visual communication, from poster design and editorial illustration to typography and branding, while moving image extends that practice into film, animation, video and screen-based work. Together they address how images and sequences communicate, persuade, narrate and engage audiences, and how the tools of visual making are evolving as the digital and physical worlds converge. At the University of the West of Scotland this programme is offered part-time, making it accessible to those who are working, caring for others, or managing other commitments alongside their studies. UWS's creative programmes draw on the distinctive character of Scottish culture and the Glasgow and west of Scotland creative economy, with strong connections to the design, film, television and digital arts sectors. You will develop both practical skills across a range of media and a critical understanding of visual culture, building a portfolio that demonstrates your range and your particular creative vision. The programme asks you to engage with process and concept as seriously as outcome, cultivating a reflective practice that can adapt to a fast-changing media landscape. Graduates of graphic arts and moving image programmes work across an impressively wide range of creative industries. Graphic design, branding, editorial design and typography are natural destinations, as are roles in animation, video production, digital media, social content creation and post-production. Many graduates work freelance, combining commercial briefs with independent practice, while others move into roles at design studios, broadcast organisations, advertising agencies, cultural institutions and educational settings. Postgraduate study in design, film, animation or visual culture is a further option for those who wish to deepen a particular specialism or move into research and teaching.
