BA Graphic Design with Foundation
About this course
Graphic design shapes everything from the logos on your morning coffee cup to the websites, packaging, signage, and editorial layouts you encounter throughout your day. The discipline combines visual thinking, communication strategy, and craft, asking designers to solve problems clearly and memorably for a specific audience. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Westminster includes a foundation year, which provides an opportunity to prepare you for advanced study before you progress onto the full honours degree. It is a structured entry point that builds your creative confidence and critical vocabulary alongside your practical skills. Throughout the programme you will develop your ability to work across print, digital, and motion contexts, exploring typography, image-making, colour theory, brand identity, user experience, and the conceptual thinking that underpins effective visual communication. Westminster's London location puts you close to a large and active creative industry, with agencies, publishers, studios, and cultural institutions all within reach. The programme includes a sandwich year placement as well as work placement opportunities, both of which allow you to bring professional experience back into your studies and to test your skills in real commercial environments before you graduate. Graphic design graduates work across an enormous range of sectors. Many go directly into design agencies or in-house studio roles in publishing, retail, media, and technology companies. Others move into art direction, brand strategy, UX and product design, motion graphics, or illustration. The conceptual and technical skills you develop are also a strong foundation for postgraduate study in design, visual communication, or design management, and the broader creative thinking the discipline fosters is valued far beyond the studio.
