BA Health And Social Care
About this course
Health and social care is a broad field concerned with the services, systems and practices that support people's wellbeing across the life course. It encompasses the NHS and social care sector, public health, community services, mental health support, disability services and the third sector, and it draws on sociology, psychology, policy analysis and the practical dimensions of professional care. Understanding how health and social care is organised, who it serves, and what shapes the experience of both service users and professionals is essential for anyone working in or seeking to improve the sector. At Bangor, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, making it an unusually rich combination of academic study and practical experience. The foundation year prepares you for degree-level work, and the structured time in professional settings and abroad gives you a depth of real-world and international exposure that is genuinely distinctive. You will study the theory and practice of health and social care, exploring how policies are developed and implemented, how organisations function, and how individuals experience and navigate the health and social care system. The year abroad and work placement offer the opportunity to see how health and social care is organised differently in other national contexts, which broadens your perspective and deepens your professional understanding. Graduates move into roles across health and social care management, commissioning, public health, community development, social work, policy and research. Many graduates use the degree as a foundation for further professional training in nursing, social work, occupational therapy or public health. Postgraduate study in health and social care, public health or social policy is a well-supported option.
