BSc Health Sciences with Foundation Year
About this course
Health sciences is a broad discipline concerned with understanding the scientific foundations of human health and the systems through which healthcare is delivered and evaluated. It covers the biological, physiological and psychological dimensions of health alongside the epidemiological, public health and policy dimensions, providing a wide lens through which to examine what health means, how it is maintained, how it fails and how it can be restored. The degree prepares you to think analytically about health and healthcare in a way that is useful both for further professional training and for a range of roles in the healthcare sector and beyond. At the University of Nottingham, the four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides a thorough grounding in the scientific and academic foundations needed for degree-level health sciences study. This route is particularly suited to students who are committed to healthcare but do not yet have the entry profile for direct first-year admission. You will study the biological sciences underpinning health, including anatomy, physiology and pathology, alongside public health, research methods and the social dimensions of healthcare. The programme is open to home applicants only. Nottingham is a university with a strong healthcare and biomedical research presence, and the health sciences programme benefits from that research culture. The university's connections with the NHS in the East Midlands support clinical and professional contexts that enrich the academic content of the degree. Graduates of health sciences degrees pursue further professional training in medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, dietetics, speech and language therapy and other health professions. Research, public health, health policy, the biomedical industry and healthcare management are also accessible career paths. Postgraduate study in a health profession, public health or health research is the natural next step for most graduates.
