About this course

Audiology is the healthcare science specialism concerned with hearing, balance and related disorders of the auditory system. Hearing loss affects a significant proportion of the population, from infants identified through newborn screening to older adults experiencing age-related decline, and the clinical, technical and communicative demands of audiological practice are considerable. Audiologists assess hearing function using a range of diagnostic techniques, fit and programme hearing aids and other assistive devices, provide rehabilitation support, and work with patients across the lifespan in hospital, community and specialist settings. At Middlesex University this three-year full-time programme leads to qualification as a healthcare scientist in audiology. You will study the anatomy and physiology of the auditory and vestibular systems, the physics of sound, the causes and patterns of hearing loss, and the diagnostic techniques used to assess auditory function in patients of different ages. Clinical placement runs throughout the degree, giving you hands-on experience in audiology departments and developing the patient communication skills that the role demands. You will also learn about hearing aid technology, cochlear implants, tinnitus management and balance rehabilitation, covering the full breadth of contemporary audiological practice. Graduates are eligible to register with the relevant professional bodies and to work as qualified audiologists within the NHS and independent healthcare sector. Audiology is a profession in consistent demand, with an ageing population increasing the need for audiological services. Experienced audiologists can progress into specialisms including paediatric audiology, cochlear implantation, tinnitus and hyperacusis treatment, vestibular rehabilitation, and audiological science research. Some move into hearing aid dispensing, education or industry roles with manufacturers of audiology technology. Postgraduate study in audiological science, clinical research or healthcare education is also a common pathway for those who want to develop specialist expertise or move into leadership.
