About this course
Hispanic studies and economics is a combination that develops two forms of understanding that are increasingly interconnected in the modern world. Spanish, the language at the heart of Hispanic studies, is spoken by more than 500 million people across two continents and is central to some of the world's fastest-growing economies in Latin America. Economics provides the formal analytical tools for understanding how those economies work, how markets are structured, and what drives growth, inequality, and trade. Together they produce a graduate who is both linguistically equipped and analytically rigorous. At Warwick, this four-year programme develops your Spanish language and cultural knowledge to an advanced level alongside rigorous training in economic theory and quantitative methods. You will engage with the literature, history, culture, and contemporary politics of the Hispanic world, developing a deep understanding of the societies whose language you are studying. The economics strand provides training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, building the analytical toolkit needed to understand international economic phenomena and to engage with the evidence on economic development, trade, and policy. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are built in, providing professional experience in relevant settings. Graduates are well placed for careers that combine language competence and economic analysis, including roles in international business, financial services, development organisations, government, journalism, and trade and investment bodies. The Hispanic dimension is particularly valuable in contexts involving Latin American or European Spanish-speaking markets. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in economics, Latin American studies, international business, or development economics.
