About this course

Hispanic studies is the academic study of the Spanish language and the diverse cultures, literatures, histories, and societies of the Spanish-speaking world, which spans Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, and Hispano-Caribbean communities across the globe. Spanish is one of the world's most widely spoken languages, with native speakers in over twenty countries across four continents, and the literary and cultural traditions associated with it are among the richest and most varied on Earth, encompassing the medieval Iberian lyric, the Golden Age drama of Lope de Vega and Calderon, the modernism of the Generation of 27, the magical realism of Garcia Marquez and Borges, and the contemporary fiction of writers from Chile to Mexico to Spain. At the University of Liverpool, this four-year full-time programme allows you to develop advanced Spanish language proficiency alongside deep engagement with the literary, cultural, and historical traditions of the Hispanic world. The four-year structure of the programme is designed to take your Spanish to a high level while giving you the time to explore the breadth and diversity of Hispanic studies as a field. Liverpool has a strong tradition in modern languages and a research active Hispanic studies department, and the programme draws on scholarly expertise across the history, literature, film, and cultural theory of the Spanish-speaking world. You will develop your language skills through extensive reading, writing, and spoken practice, study literature and film from Spain and Latin America, and engage with the historical, political, and cultural contexts that give those texts their meaning and urgency. Graduates of Hispanic studies programmes move into careers in translation and interpreting, international business and trade, diplomacy, journalism, publishing, education, the civil service, and international organisations. The breadth of the Spanish-speaking world means that Spanish language skills are valued across an enormous range of sectors and geographies.
