About this course
History and literature together invite you to explore how human experience has been shaped and recorded across time, through the events and structures studied by historians and the imaginative and linguistic forms examined by literary scholars. History develops the ability to read evidence critically, to understand the conditions under which past events unfolded, and to situate ideas and actions within their social and political contexts. Literature adds a complementary dimension, attending to how writers have used language, narrative, and form to make sense of human experience, including the historical moments through which they lived. This part-time programme at the University of the Highlands and Islands allows you to combine the disciplines at a pace that fits alongside other commitments, and the Highlands and Islands context gives the programme a distinctive regional grounding in Scottish, Gaelic, and Northern cultural history and literary tradition. You will study both disciplines with the seriousness they deserve, developing critical reading skills, historical research methods, and the ability to write clearly and persuasively about complex ideas. The combination is particularly suited to those with an existing interest in Scottish, Irish, or Nordic history and literature, or in the wider relationship between historical events and their imaginative representation. Graduates of history and literature programmes move into careers in teaching, educational support, heritage, museums, libraries, publishing, journalism, writing, and the cultural sector more broadly. The analytical and communication skills developed across both disciplines are broadly applicable, and many graduates find that the combination serves them well in roles that require deep reading, clear writing, and contextual intelligence. Further postgraduate study in history, literature, creative writing, or Scottish studies is a natural extension for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
