BA History and Media
About this course
History and media is a combination that connects the study of the past with the discipline of how information, stories, and representations are produced and consumed. History provides the analytical tools to understand change over time, to interrogate evidence, and to think critically about how and why events unfolded as they did. Media studies examines the technologies, industries, and cultural forms through which societies communicate, represent themselves, and construct shared understanding. Together, they develop a graduate who can think historically about media and critically about history, with skills in research, analysis, and communication that are valued across many fields. At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time degree is embedded in a school that takes employability seriously from the outset. Career thinking begins in the first year and deepens through the second and third years, with the opportunity to engage in live brief learning challenges, real-life projects designed by employers, and work placement opportunities. A year abroad is available, broadening your academic and cultural experience. The combination of historical thinking and media analysis develops skills in critical engagement with evidence, narrative construction, and the communication of complex ideas to different audiences. The typical entry tariff is 104 points. History and media graduates work in journalism, broadcasting, publishing, public relations, marketing, education, heritage, and the cultural sector. Many also move into digital content, social media, film and television production, and arts administration. The critical thinking, research ability, and communication skills the degree develops are valued across public life and professional practice. Postgraduate study in history, media studies, journalism, digital communications, or cultural studies is a natural continuation.
