About this course
History and philosophy is one of the most enduringly productive combinations in the humanities. History asks what happened, how it came about, and what it meant to the people who lived through it, developing a disciplined engagement with evidence, narrative, and the complexity of human experience over time. Philosophy asks what we can know, what we should value, and how we ought to reason, applying rigorous argument to questions that are foundational rather than merely empirical. Studied together, they enrich each other: historical study benefits from philosophical clarity about concepts and methods, and philosophical questions are deepened by engagement with how they have been answered differently across time and cultures. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time joint honours programme is flexible, allowing you to develop your own areas of specialism and expertise across the two disciplines and to shape your degree to suit your intellectual interests. You will engage with historical periods and themes alongside philosophical areas that interest you, building a personalised programme that is both broad and genuinely deep. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you a rich combination of practical and international experiences.
