BA History and Philosophy
About this course
History and philosophy together offer a particularly powerful combination for anyone who wants to understand how human thought and behaviour have developed over time and how to engage critically with the ideas that shape the present. History develops your ability to read evidence, construct explanations of complex events and processes, and understand change and continuity across societies and periods. Philosophy trains you in rigorous conceptual analysis, logical argument and the critical examination of foundational assumptions about knowledge, value and human nature. Combining them develops both the historical imagination and the analytical precision that independent intellectual judgement demands. At the University of Sheffield, this three-year programme allows you to deepen your understanding of human thought and behaviour across time and place. You will study history across a range of periods, regions and thematic areas, engaging with primary sources and developing your ability to construct and assess historical arguments. In philosophy you will work through major traditions in ethics, epistemology, political philosophy and metaphysics, developing analytical skills that you can apply both within the discipline and beyond it. A sandwich placement year provides professional experience, and a year abroad and work placement opportunities give you further ways to extend your programme beyond the lecture room. Sheffield's emphasis on intellectual growth and independent judgement reflects the practical value these skills have for employers across many fields. Graduates in history and philosophy enter careers in the civil service, law, journalism, teaching, policy research, political organisations, publishing and the arts. The critical and analytical capabilities the degree develops are valued in any field that requires evidence-based reasoning and clear communication. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in history, philosophy, law, public policy or political theory, and the degree is recognised as strong preparation for a wide range of research and professional roles.
