BA History
About this course
History is the discipline through which we make sense of the past and, in doing so, come to understand the present more clearly. It asks how things came to be as they are, who made the decisions that shaped events, and whose experiences have been recorded and whose have been overlooked. Studying history at degree level means more than knowing what happened: it means developing the skills to evaluate evidence critically, to construct and defend interpretations, and to understand that the past is always contested and always being reinterpreted. At Brunel University London, the BA History programme is designed to be accessible to students whatever their prior experience with the subject. You do not need to have studied history at A-level or equivalent: the degree is built on the assumption that all students begin on the same level and develop their historical knowledge and skills through the course. This openness is a genuine strength, and the department's approach to teaching reflects it. You will study history across a range of periods and themes, from ancient and medieval to modern and contemporary, developing the research, analysis and writing skills that define the discipline. The programme includes a foundation year option for students who need additional preparation before beginning degree-level study. Brunel's London location places you in one of the world's great historical cities, with access to major archives, museums, libraries and historical sites that enrich your study beyond the classroom. History graduates are found across a remarkably wide range of careers. The analytical, research and communication skills the degree develops are valued in law, journalism, the civil service, education, the heritage sector, publishing, politics, public relations and finance. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in history, archival science, heritage management, law or education.
