BA History
About this course
History is the discipline that takes human experience across time as its subject, asking not just what happened but why, how contemporaries understood events, and what long-run patterns can be discerned beneath the surface of individual episodes. It is a discipline that rewards curiosity, careful reading, and the ability to weigh contradictory evidence, and it develops skills in research, analysis, and written argument that are valued in a remarkably wide range of careers and further study. At Nottingham Trent University, this part-time programme allows you to study history while managing other commitments, and it includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, grounding the academic content of the degree in practical professional experience. History is, as the programme suggests, a living and breathing subject, constantly renewing itself as new evidence comes to light, new questions are asked, and new interpretations emerge. You will engage with that ongoing scholarly conversation, developing the ability to read primary sources critically, to evaluate competing historical arguments, and to communicate your findings clearly and persuasively. The placement element gives you the opportunity to apply historical skills in professional settings, whether in archives, heritage organisations, museums, schools, or other environments where the ability to research and interpret the past is directly valued. History graduates are employed across the civil service, journalism, law, education, archival and heritage work, publishing, politics, research, and the charitable sector. The transferable skills developed in the degree, including research, critical thinking, and the ability to construct and communicate complex arguments, make historians adaptable and effective in a wide range of roles. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in history, public history, heritage management, law, or public administration, building on the undergraduate foundation to develop more specialised expertise.
