BA History (online)
About this course
History is a discipline that develops the capacity to think critically about evidence, to understand complex causation, and to engage seriously with the experiences of people and societies very different from our own. It asks not just what happened but why, and who decided which version of events would be recorded and remembered. These are questions that matter not only for understanding the past but for making sense of the present, and the skills they develop, in research, analysis, writing, and argument, are among the most transferable that any undergraduate degree provides. Teesside's online full-time history degree is delivered through distance learning, making it accessible to students who cannot attend campus regularly. You will engage with history across a range of periods and contexts, developing the critical and analytical skills that the discipline demands. The online format is designed to provide genuine intellectual engagement with primary and secondary sources, and you will learn to read, question, and write about historical evidence in ways that challenge assumptions and build independent judgement. The curriculum engages with modern and contemporary history alongside broader periods, exploring the social, political, cultural, and economic forces that shape the world we live in. History graduates are valued by employers across journalism, the civil service, law, education, heritage, publishing, archiving, and many other sectors. The research, writing, and analytical skills that historical study develops are directly applicable to professional work in any context that requires making sense of complex information and communicating it clearly. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in history, heritage management, or related fields.
