BA History
About this course
History is the study of the human past, not merely as a chronicle of events but as an investigation into causation, change, continuity and the forces that have shaped societies over time. It is a discipline that demands close reading of sources, critical evaluation of evidence, the ability to construct explanatory arguments and the capacity to understand the past on its own terms while also seeing its relevance to the present. History trains a rigour of thinking that transfers remarkably well across a wide range of careers and contexts. The University of Huddersfield offers this three-year full-time history degree with a sandwich year in industry and an embedded work placement, bringing a professional dimension to what might otherwise be a purely academic experience. The academic content covers a wide chronological and geographical range, developing both the broad knowledge and the specific depth that good historical understanding requires. You will learn to read primary sources critically, to engage with historiographical debates, to conduct independent archival research and to write with analytical clarity about complex historical questions. The sandwich year provides sustained professional experience in a context where historical, research and communication skills are applied, which might include heritage, archives, museums, education, journalism, the public sector or the charity sector. The work placement element adds further professional exposure and connection. History develops the ability to manage large bodies of complex and sometimes contradictory information, to construct persuasive arguments from evidence, to write clearly and to think carefully about causation and context. These are capabilities that serve well in almost any career that requires sound judgement and good communication. Graduates work in education, archives, heritage and museums, journalism, law, the civil service, local government, the charity sector, publishing and a very wide range of other fields. The placement year gives Huddersfield history graduates a practical edge that purely academic programmes do not always provide.
