BA History
About this course
History is the study of human experience across time, using surviving evidence to reconstruct and interpret the past with care and intellectual honesty. It is not simply a matter of learning what happened: it is a discipline that develops critical thinking, the ability to evaluate sources and competing interpretations, and the skill of constructing persuasive arguments from incomplete evidence. These are capabilities of lasting value, and they explain why history graduates are sought after across so many professions. Studying history at the University of Manchester means working within one of the UK's most distinguished departments, with access to exceptional libraries and archives and a research culture that enriches the undergraduate experience. This three-year full-time programme gives you considerable flexibility to focus on the periods, regions, and themes that interest you most, from medieval to modern, from local to global. You will engage with primary sources, read widely in secondary scholarship, attend seminars where interpretation is debated seriously, and develop your own extended research work. The programme is demanding in the best sense: it asks you to form your own views and defend them rigorously. History graduates from Manchester, and from strong history programmes generally, are highly regarded by employers for the transferable skills the discipline develops. Careers include journalism, the law, public policy, the civil service, archiving and heritage, education, publishing, broadcasting, and business. Many graduates also pursue careers in international organisations, the charitable sector, and academia. Postgraduate study in history, law, political science, or related humanities fields is a natural progression for those who want to specialise or pursue research. The programme's breadth and rigour prepare you well for any of these paths.
