BSc Human Anatomy
About this course
Human anatomy is the systematic study of the structure of the human body. It encompasses bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs, examining not only where they are and what they look like but how they function together as an integrated system and how their structure relates to their function. Anatomy is foundational to medicine, physiotherapy, surgery, and all of the health sciences that require practitioners to understand the body they are working with, and it is also a discipline of genuine intellectual depth in its own right. At Keele University, this full-time, three-year BSc provides superior insights into clinical applied anatomy, equipping you with essential skills and knowledge for careers in healthcare, education, or research. One of the programme's most distinctive features is that Keele has direct, on-site access to an anatomy and surgical training centre, giving you access to world-class teaching laboratories and hands-on practical experience, including cadaveric dissection. The opportunity to work with cadaveric material is educationally significant, developing a three-dimensional understanding of anatomical structures that no other teaching method can match. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing substantial professional and international experience alongside your scientific training. Graduates from human anatomy programmes move into healthcare, biomedical science, medical illustration, anatomical pathology, clinical research, and education. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, or other health professions, using the anatomy degree as a foundation for professional qualification. Research careers in anatomy, functional morphology, and related biological sciences are also paths for those who wish to go further. The depth of anatomical knowledge developed during the degree is also a significant asset for roles in surgical simulation, medical device development, and the growing field of surgical training.
