About this course

Human geography and anthropology are disciplines that between them cover the full complexity of how human beings inhabit, understand, and shape the world. Human geography examines the spatial and environmental dimensions of social life, asking how places are produced through economic activity, migration, political decision-making, and cultural practice, and how patterns of inequality and difference are mapped onto the landscape of the world. Anthropology takes an even broader view, examining the full diversity of human cultures and ways of life, using methods of fieldwork and participant observation to understand societies on their own terms rather than through external frameworks. At Brunel, this three-year programme combines the expertise of staff from both disciplines, developing your knowledge and skills across the full range of concerns that human geography and anthropology address. You will study the theoretical frameworks of each discipline, develop research methods relevant to both, and engage with the substantive questions of place, culture, inequality, migration, environmental change, and development that connect them. Placements are built into the programme, giving you direct professional experience in a relevant setting. Graduates are well placed for careers in international development, NGOs, government, social research, community development, urban planning, environmental organisations, journalism, and education. The combination of spatial thinking and cultural analysis is particularly valuable in roles that require understanding the relationship between place, society, and culture, including work in globalisation, migration, and sustainable development. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in human geography, anthropology, international development, or urban studies, and some pursue doctoral research in applied social science.
