About this course

Human geography and environment is the study of how people and the natural world shape each other, a question that has never felt more urgent than it does today. The discipline draws on social science, environmental science, and spatial analysis to examine issues including urbanisation, climate change, food security, resource distribution, political ecology, and environmental justice. At the University of York, this three-year full-time programme builds the essential skills, knowledge, and abilities to help you comprehend and address significant social and environmental issues. You will develop expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, learning how to gather, analyse, and interpret evidence from fieldwork, surveys, spatial data, and secondary sources. The programme challenges you to think critically about the relationships between people and place, to understand how environmental problems are entangled with social inequality, and to evaluate the policies and interventions designed to address them. The sandwich year placement and work placement opportunities allow you to apply these skills in professional environments before you graduate, while the year abroad provides the chance to study environmental and human geography issues in a different national context. Human geography graduates are well placed for careers in local and central government, environmental agencies, urban planning, international development, sustainability consultancy, NGOs, and the third sector. The quantitative and spatial skills you develop are increasingly valued by employers in data analysis, urban technology, and policy research. Postgraduate study in environmental policy, planning, development studies, or GIS is a common next step, and the intellectual breadth of the degree supports doctoral research across a wide range of related fields.
