About this course

Hungarian and Ukrainian is a particularly timely and distinctive language combination, bringing together a Finno-Ugric language and an Eastern Slavic language that are both, for different reasons, of growing significance. Hungarian, spoken by around 13 million people in Hungary and substantial minority communities in Romania, Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine, is one of Europe's largest non-Indo-European languages, offering a uniquely challenging and rewarding linguistic system. Ukrainian, spoken by approximately 40 million people, has moved to the centre of European political attention and carries with it a rich literary and cultural tradition of its own. At University College London, which has significant expertise in both Central European and Slavonic language studies, this four-year full-time programme develops advanced proficiency in Hungarian and Ukrainian simultaneously. You will study the grammar, phonology and written registers of both languages through intensive tuition, while engaging with the literatures, histories and contemporary political and cultural affairs of Hungary and Ukraine. UCL's position in London provides access to both Central European and Ukrainian diaspora communities, as well as to the professional and cultural networks associated with each language. Graduates with proficiency in Hungarian and Ukrainian are in an exceptionally distinctive position. Careers in diplomacy, journalism covering Central and Eastern Europe, humanitarian and development work in Ukraine, translation and interpreting, international organisations, academic research, cultural institutions and intelligence work are all accessible routes. The combination is particularly relevant given the current geopolitical significance of Ukraine and Hungary's position within the European Union. Postgraduate study in Central European studies, Slavonic languages, area studies, translation or international relations provides a natural next step.
