BA Illustration
About this course
Illustration is a discipline that sits at the intersection of visual art, communication, and storytelling. Illustrators bring ideas to life in images, working across publishing, editorial media, advertising, animation, games, textiles, and public spaces, and the field has expanded dramatically with digital tools that allow illustrators to work in new ways and reach global audiences. Studying illustration seriously means developing a personal visual language alongside technical versatility, the ability to respond to a brief, and the professional understanding of how to sustain a creative practice. At Sheffield Hallam University this part-time programme is described as progressive and technologically enhanced, preparing students for professional practice through applied creative projects that reflect real-world challenges. Employability is integrated throughout the curriculum, building confidence, creative resilience, and the professional skills that a career in illustration demands. The programme includes a foundation year, providing a structured entry point to the degree, and a sandwich year, giving you extended professional experience that connects your creative development to the realities of working in the industry. Work placement opportunities are also built into the course. Illustration graduates work as professional illustrators across children's books, editorial and magazine illustration, graphic novels, advertising, packaging, surface design, app and web design, game art, and animated media. Many build freelance practices alongside or in place of employed roles, developing a portfolio of clients across different contexts. Others move into related creative careers including art direction, character design, visual development, and design. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in illustration, animation, or fine art to develop their practice or research expertise.
