BSc Industrial Economics with Placement Year
About this course
Industrial economics is a branch of economics concerned with how industries are organised, how firms behave and compete, and how market structures, regulation and policy shape the outcomes of economic activity. It draws on microeconomic theory to analyse real markets, examining questions of market power, pricing strategies, entry barriers, innovation, mergers and the regulatory frameworks that govern competition and industry structure. Industrial economists provide some of the most practically relevant analytical tools in the economist's toolkit, contributing directly to competition policy, regulatory reform and business strategy. At Nottingham, this four-year full-time programme includes both a placement year and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside the academic depth of the degree. The placement year allows you to apply economic reasoning in a real professional context, whether in business, financial services, government or a research organisation. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study economics at a partner university in another country, broadening your academic perspective and developing your international outlook. You will study industrial economics alongside the core areas of microeconomics and macroeconomics, econometrics and quantitative methods, developing the analytical skills that make economics graduates consistently competitive in the job market. Nottingham's School of Economics is a research-led institution, and you will benefit from exposure to economics at the frontier of the discipline. Graduates of industrial economics programmes move into economic consulting, competition regulation and analysis, banking and financial services, government economic analysis, corporate strategy and data analytics. The analytical and quantitative skills the degree develops are valued across a very wide range of sectors. Many graduates pursue professional qualifications or postgraduate study in economics, finance or data science.
