BA Interior Design
About this course
Interior design is the practice of creating interior spaces that are functional, safe, and aesthetically meaningful, responding to the needs of the people who will inhabit them while also working within the constraints of the existing structure, budget, and building regulations. It is a discipline that sits between architecture, product design, and the decorative arts, requiring practitioners to develop ideas through research, drawing, and modelling, and to communicate those ideas to clients, contractors, and other collaborators. Good interior design improves quality of life in tangible ways, whether through the layout of a hospital ward, the feel of a restaurant, the comfort of a home, or the energy of a workspace. At Teesside University, this part-time programme develops your skills in design thinking, spatial design, technical drawing, material specification, lighting design, and project management, working through briefs that respond to real or realistic contexts. You will develop your creative and analytical capabilities alongside the professional skills needed to work effectively in a team, communicate ideas with clarity, and manage projects from concept to completion. The programme enhances your abilities in team-working, communication, project management, and negotiation through collaborative creative projects as well as individual design work, reflecting the reality that professional interior designers rarely work alone. Graduates of interior design programmes work in residential, commercial, retail, hospitality, and healthcare design, either in design studios and architectural practices or independently. Roles include interior designer, space planner, furniture designer, set designer, exhibition designer, and design project manager. The creative and professional skills the degree develops are also applicable in visual merchandising, brand experience design, and related areas of the design industry. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in interior design, architecture, or spatial design, developing more advanced expertise and professional credentials.
