BA Interior Design
About this course
Interior Design is the discipline concerned with shaping the spaces people inhabit, work, and spend time in. It sits at the intersection of spatial thinking, creative vision, and technical knowledge, requiring practitioners to understand how physical environments affect the people who use them and how design decisions about light, material, colour, layout, and furniture interact to produce particular experiences. Good interior design is both functional and atmospheric, solving practical problems while creating spaces that feel right for their purpose and their users. At the University of Salford, this three-year, full-time degree develops your skills in creativity and technology, helping you to translate ideas into spatial designs across a wide variety of contexts. You will work across scales and typologies, from domestic interiors and high-end retail environments to restaurants, galleries, and commercial spaces, developing the visual and technical repertoire needed to address different briefs with confidence. The programme builds expertise in drawing, digital modelling, material specification, and project presentation alongside the conceptual thinking that distinguishes considered design from mere decoration. Interior design graduates work across a wide range of professional environments. Private practice, commercial design studios, architecture firms, and in-house design teams for retailers, hospitality brands, and property developers are all common destinations. The skills you develop, including spatial reasoning, visual communication, and the ability to manage a project from concept through to technical specification, also translate to related fields such as set design, exhibition design, and visual merchandising. For those who wish to continue their studies, postgraduate programmes in interior architecture, spatial design, and design research offer opportunities for further specialisation.
