About this course

International relations and economics is a combination that addresses the architecture of the world we live in: how states and international institutions are organised, how power is exercised between them, and how the economic systems that connect and divide nations shape both prosperity and conflict. International relations examines the theory and practice of how states behave, how international institutions function, what drives war and cooperation, and how norms and law operate in the international system. Economics provides the analytical frameworks for understanding how markets, trade, financial flows and macroeconomic policy shape the fates of countries and their populations. At Roehampton University, this three-year full-time degree develops your analytical and critical skills across both disciplines, building the capacity to engage with the complexities of contemporary power dynamics and to understand how economic forces shape political choices and outcomes. You will study international relations theory, geopolitics, global governance, development economics, macroeconomics and the political economy of international trade and finance. The combination equips you to think as a genuinely informed global citizen, capable of engaging critically with the forces that determine outcomes in an interconnected world. Typical entry is around 72 UCAS tariff points. Graduates from international relations and economics programmes go on to careers in international organisations, the civil service and diplomatic service, financial services, development agencies, journalism, think tanks, NGOs, policy research and international business. The combination of political and economic analytical skills is particularly valued in organisations that need professionals who understand both the institutional and the material dimensions of international affairs. Further study in international relations, economics, public policy, development studies or law is a natural progression for those who wish to deepen their expertise.
