About this course

International security studies is a discipline that examines the nature, causes and management of threats and conflicts at the global, regional and state levels. It draws on international relations theory, political science, history and strategic studies to address questions about why wars occur, how states and non-state actors use force, how international institutions attempt to manage conflict, and what security means in a world where threats include terrorism, cyber attacks, environmental risks and the proliferation of dangerous technologies. The field has grown significantly in recent decades as the security landscape has become more complex and the stakes of getting security policy wrong have become more apparent. At the University of Nottingham, this three-year programme gives you a thorough grounding in international security studies, examining the theoretical frameworks through which security is understood and the empirical cases that test and challenge them. You will study topics including war and conflict, counter-terrorism, nuclear proliferation, cyber security and the role of international organisations in maintaining peace and security. A sandwich placement year provides professional experience relevant to a career in security, policy or international affairs, and a year abroad adds international perspective. Work placement opportunities are integrated throughout the programme. Graduates in international security studies pursue careers in government, diplomacy, the armed forces, intelligence, security consulting, international organisations, journalism and think tanks. The analytical and research skills developed through the degree are valuable wherever complex political and strategic questions need to be understood and communicated. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in international relations, strategic studies, terrorism studies, conflict resolution or related fields, which is often the route into specialist roles in government, international organisations or academic research.
