BA Italian and Hebrew
About this course
Italian and Hebrew is an exceptional pairing that spans two of the most significant cultural traditions of the Mediterranean world. Italian, the language of Dante, Petrarch, Leonardo, and Verdi, connects you to one of the most celebrated literary and artistic traditions in the world, and to a contemporary culture of extraordinary richness. Hebrew connects you to a tradition of even greater antiquity, one that underlies three of the world's major religions, that produced some of the most influential texts in human history, and that is today the living language of a vibrant and complex modern state. At the University of Oxford, this four-year full-time degree is offered within the European and Middle Eastern Languages programme, which recognises the profound cultural and historical links between European and Middle Eastern linguistic traditions. Italian and Hebrew are a particularly resonant combination, given the deep connections between Italian Renaissance culture and Jewish intellectual life, the long history of Jewish communities in Italian cities, and the enduring dialogue between these two civilisations. You will develop genuine proficiency in both languages alongside serious engagement with the literatures, histories, and cultures they represent. The typical entry tariff is 184 UCAS points. Graduates of Italian and Hebrew programmes from Oxford are exceptionally well placed for careers in academic research, translation and interpreting, diplomacy, journalism, international organisations, cultural institutions, publishing, and any field where deep linguistic expertise and cross-cultural understanding are valued. The rarity of this combination, combined with Oxford's exceptional reputation, gives graduates a distinctive and highly competitive profile. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in Italian studies, Hebrew and Jewish studies, linguistics, or comparative literature, and Oxford's own graduate programmes in these areas are among the strongest in the world.
