About this course

Italian, Persian, and Spanish is one of the most ambitious multilingual combinations available at any UK university, bringing together three languages of very different character and reach: a major European Romance language with one of the richest literary and cultural traditions in the world, the classical language of one of the great literary civilisations of the ancient and medieval world, and the most widely spoken Romance language globally. Studying all three develops an exceptional linguistic range, a comparative understanding of how different languages work, and deep cultural knowledge of several of the world's most significant civilisations. At St Andrews this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops your proficiency in all three languages to a high level, alongside specialist engagement with Italian literature, culture, history, politics, and film, the Persian literary and cultural tradition, and the diverse literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. You will study each language and culture in genuine depth, making connections across traditions and developing the comparative literary and cultural intelligence that study of multiple languages enables. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in at least one of your language cultures in a sustained way and develop your fluency beyond what classroom study alone can achieve. Graduates with this combination of languages are exceptionally rare and in strong demand for careers in diplomacy, translation and interpreting, international organisations, journalism with a focus on Italy, the Persian-speaking world, or Latin America, international business, and academic research. The breadth of cultural and linguistic knowledge the degree provides positions graduates well for roles requiring cross-cultural communication and the ability to operate in multiple professional and cultural contexts. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in one or more of their language areas or in comparative literature or translation.
