About this course

Italian is one of the great European languages, carrying the literary and cultural inheritance of Rome, the Renaissance, and one of the world's richest traditions of art, music, literature, and thought. Italy remains a leading economy with a powerful role in European politics, fashion, design, food culture, and creative industries, making the ability to engage with Italian in its own terms a genuinely valuable and distinctive capability. A degree in Italian develops not just linguistic proficiency but deep cultural knowledge and the intellectual habits that come from engaging seriously with a great literary tradition. At the University of Leeds, this four-year full-time programme welcomes both beginners and advanced learners, making it accessible to those starting Italian from scratch as well as those with prior knowledge. You will develop your understanding of Italy's language and culture in depth, engaging with literature, cinema, history, and contemporary society alongside your linguistic development. A sandwich year is built into the programme, and work placement is also available, giving you the opportunity to spend time in an Italian-speaking environment and to apply your skills professionally before your final year. You will develop advanced linguistic competence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Italian, alongside the cultural and historical knowledge that makes that competence meaningful. The ability to move fluently between English and Italian and to engage with Italian culture in its own terms is a rare and valued combination. Graduates go on to careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy, journalism, education, tourism, arts and cultural organisations, publishing, and a range of other fields where Italian language and cultural knowledge is valued. Postgraduate study in Italian, linguistics, or translation is an option for those wishing to specialise. Many graduates also go on to teach Italian at secondary level, where there is consistent demand.
