About this course

Journalism sits at the heart of a functioning democracy. It holds power to account, informs citizens, and provides the shared record of events that societies need to understand themselves. The digital revolution has transformed how journalism is practised and consumed, creating new forms, new platforms, and new pressures, but it has not diminished the need for skilled journalists who can verify information, construct compelling narratives, and communicate complex ideas clearly to wide audiences. At Brunel you will develop the core skills of journalism alongside a broader understanding of communication, culture, and media. The programme covers reporting, writing, broadcasting, digital journalism, interviewing, multimedia production, and the ethical and legal frameworks within which journalism operates. Whether your interest lies in writing for newspapers and magazines, presenting and producing for broadcast, or working in digital and social media journalism, you will develop practical skills alongside the critical understanding of communication, culture, arts, and sport that makes journalism education valuable well beyond the newsroom. The three-year full-time programme gives you the time to develop your craft and to build the portfolio of work that journalism employers look for. Graduates go on to careers in newspapers, magazines, broadcasting, online media, news agencies, public relations, and communications. The ability to write clearly, tell stories effectively, verify information rigorously, and understand how audiences engage with media is valued in many sectors beyond journalism itself, including government communications, corporate affairs, and the charity sector. Postgraduate journalism qualifications and further specialist training are also options for those who want to develop further expertise.
