About this course

Journalism, media and communication combined with Spanish is a degree that equips you with both the professional and critical skills of a media education and the linguistic and cultural competence to work in, or report on, one of the world's most widely spoken languages and its associated cultures. Spanish is the official language of more than twenty countries and spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Latin America, Spain and beyond, making it one of the most useful languages for any career that involves international communication. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme develops your skills in journalism, communication and information design alongside a critical understanding of how the media industry works and its relationship to democracy and public life. The Spanish component develops your language proficiency and your engagement with the cultures, literatures, histories and contemporary politics of the Spanish-speaking world. The programme is taught in Glasgow, giving you access to a dynamic professional media environment, and the combination of a core professional media programme with a full language specialism is both distinctive and practically valuable in careers that cross national and linguistic boundaries. Graduates move into careers across the media industry, including journalism in print, broadcast and digital formats, communications, content creation, public relations and social media management. The Spanish specialism opens particular opportunities for roles in international journalism, Latin American affairs, translation and roles with multinational organisations where communication across Spanish and English is required. Some graduates move into public affairs, advocacy, education and the charitable sector. Postgraduate study in journalism, media studies, Spanish studies or translation is a natural next step for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
