BA Journalism, Politics and History
About this course
Journalism, politics, and history make a coherent and mutually reinforcing combination, because good journalism requires exactly what politics and history develop: an understanding of context, power, institutions, and ideas that makes reported events intelligible rather than merely factual. Journalists who lack political and historical knowledge produce thinner, more easily manipulated reporting. Historians and political scientists who understand journalism are better equipped to engage with contemporary public debate and to communicate their expertise beyond the academy. At City St George's, University of London, this BA gives you the chance to engage with the ideas and events that have shaped the modern world while developing the practical craft of journalism. You will receive first-rate education in practical journalism, including reporting, writing, broadcasting, and digital storytelling, alongside a sound academic foundation in politics and history that gives greater authority and expertise to your journalism. The programme runs over three years full-time and includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, ensuring that you graduate with genuine professional experience alongside your academic qualifications. Graduates of journalism, politics, and history programmes work as journalists, reporters, and editors across print, broadcast, and digital media. The political and historical knowledge they bring distinguishes them in areas such as political reporting, foreign correspondence, investigative journalism, and policy communication. Many also go into public affairs, communications, research, and the civil service, where the ability to write clearly and argue persuasively about political and historical questions is consistently valued. Postgraduate study in journalism, politics, or history is also a common route for those who want to deepen their expertise.
