BA Journalism with Media Studies
About this course
Journalism with media studies is a degree that combines the practice and craft of journalism with a critical analytical framework for understanding the media landscape in which journalism operates. Journalism develops your skills in reporting, interviewing, writing, editing and producing content across print, broadcast and digital platforms. Media studies provides the theoretical and analytical tools to understand how media industries are organised, how media texts are constructed and consumed, and how journalism's role in public life is changing in an era of digital disruption, social media and shifting audience behaviour. At the University of Portsmouth you will study this three-year full-time programme, which includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and embedded work placement opportunities. The placement year gives you sustained professional experience in a journalism or media context, and the year abroad broadens your understanding of how journalism and media operate across different national and cultural contexts. Portsmouth's location on the South Coast, with good connections to London and the South East, places you within reach of a varied media landscape. The typical entry tariff for this programme is around 104 UCAS points. You will develop skills in news reporting, feature writing, audio and video production, digital media, data journalism and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern the profession, alongside your analytical understanding of media industries, media economics and the sociology of news. The combination of practical skills and critical understanding is a particular strength, equipping you to reflect on your practice as well as to perform it. Graduates of journalism with media studies programmes work across print, digital, broadcast and online journalism, as well as in public relations, corporate communications, content creation, broadcasting and media management. Many graduates begin in reporting, production or editorial roles before progressing to more specialist or senior positions. Postgraduate study in journalism, media studies, broadcast journalism or public relations is a further option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or move into research.
