About this course

Latin and Spanish together span the ancient and the modern, connecting the most widely influential language of the classical world with one of the most widely spoken languages of the contemporary one. Latin opens direct access to the literature and intellectual heritage of Rome, which shaped European thought, law, and culture for millennia, and reading Latin texts in the original gives you a form of historical intimacy with the ancient world that no translation can replicate. Spanish opens access to an extraordinary range of living cultures, literatures, and film traditions across Spain, Latin America, and the global Spanish-speaking community, and is spoken by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement component, giving you structured professional experience alongside your academic studies. You will develop Spanish to a high level through language classes and the study of literature, culture, and film, working with native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, which is itself valuable given the diversity of Spanish across continents. Your Latin studies will take you through texts across the major periods and genres of Roman writing, developing both linguistic competence and literary and historical understanding. The placement component gives you the opportunity to apply your languages and cultural knowledge in a professional setting. The combination develops exceptional linguistic range, comparative cultural understanding, and the analytical and communication skills that language degrees produce at their best. Graduates move into careers in journalism, publishing, translation and interpreting, education, cultural institutions, international business, the civil service, and diplomacy. Some pursue postgraduate study in classics, Hispanic studies, or related areas.
