Latin and mathematics might seem an unlikely pairing, but both disciplines share a commitment to precision, logical structure, and the rigorous analysis of complex systems. Latin opens a window onto the ancient world through its literature, history, and thought, while mathematics provides some of the most powerful tools for understanding the modern world. Studying them together at the University of Glasgow over four years of full-time study gives you an unusually broad and disciplined mind. On the Latin side you will read Virgil, Ovid, and other Latin poets, encounter Roman drama in both tragedy and comedy, study orators and historians, and explore Roman political and social history, philosophy, religion, and art. The language itself is a demanding object of study, requiring close attention to syntax, grammar, and word choice, and developing the kind of careful analytical reading that transfers across many fields. On the mathematics side you will develop your skills in pure and applied mathematics, working through calculus, algebra, analysis, statistics, and more advanced areas depending on the options you choose. The year abroad gives you the chance to study in another country, broadening your intellectual and personal horizons. A typical tariff of 216 points reflects the rigour of this combined degree. Graduates from Latin and mathematics combinations go into a wide range of careers in which logical thinking, linguistic precision, and analytical depth are valued.
