About this course

Law at the University of Warwick is taught with a distinctive philosophy: that understanding legal rules requires understanding the social, political and economic contexts in which those rules operate. Warwick pioneered the sociolegal approach to legal education, which means that alongside the technical mastery of legal doctrine, you will examine how law functions in society, who benefits from it and who is disadvantaged by it, and how legal institutions reflect and reinforce power relationships. This produces graduates who think critically about law rather than simply applying it. The four-year full-time LLB includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to study law in a different legal system and cultural context. This is a significant opportunity that deepens your comparative understanding of law and provides a foundation for careers in international legal practice or academic research. You will study the foundations of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, property and equity, alongside more specialist options in areas such as international law, human rights, commercial law and jurisprudence. Warwick Law School has a strong research reputation, and the contextual approach to law means that your legal education is enriched by engagement with history, politics, economics and social science. This breadth is a strength, particularly for graduates who want to understand law not just as a set of rules to be applied but as a social institution to be evaluated critically. Graduates of Warwick Law practise as solicitors and barristers across all areas of law, and also work in the civil service, business, financial services, international organisations, policy research, academia and journalism. Postgraduate study in law, comparative law or sociolegal studies is a natural continuation.
