BA Law and Arabic
About this course
Law and Arabic is a degree that develops two kinds of rigour simultaneously: the analytical discipline of legal study and the linguistic and cultural depth of serious Arabic engagement. Law trains you to read rules and cases precisely, to identify legal issues in complex situations, and to construct and communicate arguments clearly. Arabic gives you access to a language spoken by over 300 million people, a legal and intellectual tradition of enormous historical significance, and direct engagement with one of the world's most strategically important regions. Together they produce a graduate with a combination of capabilities that is rare and genuinely sought after. This four-year full-time programme at the School of Oriental and African Studies includes a foundation year, providing additional preparatory support before the main degree begins. SOAS is the UK's leading institution for the study of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and its law programme is shaped by that distinctive orientation: you will study English law alongside specific engagement with Islamic law, Middle Eastern legal systems, and international law as it applies in the Arab world. With a typical tariff of 136 points, the foundation year pathway makes this combination accessible to students who may not meet standard entry requirements but who bring genuine motivation and ability. You will develop Arabic language skills alongside the core subjects of English law, engaging with the legal traditions and contemporary legal systems of the Arabic-speaking world in ways that purely Anglophone legal education cannot provide. The combination is particularly powerful for anyone interested in international commercial law, human rights, humanitarian law, or legal practice involving Middle Eastern clients and jurisdictions. Graduates from law and Arabic programmes move into careers in international law, the diplomatic service, international organisations, human rights practice, journalism, government, and commercial roles involving the Arab world. Professional legal training in England and Wales is a natural continuation for those who want to qualify as solicitors or barristers.
